A Cinderella Story

A plain, tired kitchen gets a Cinderella makeover

When Alan and Andrea decided it was time to modernize their small, dated kitchen, they didn’t just change the paint color or add new accessories; they did a complete kitchen renovation, including knocking down a load-bearing wall to open up their living space.

The original kitchen was a cramped room with inadequate lighting, which gave it a weary, closed-in feeling.  Andrea dreamed of an open floor plan with lots of natural light and a welcoming space perfect for entertaining, so they met with a local contractor, Greg Gallaher, for ideas. Their contractor worked with their designer, Marge Heinz, and DuBell Lumber of Medford, NJ, to create the kitchen of Alan and Andrea’s dreams.

Marge recommended Aristokraft cabinets in Briarcliff Maple, finished in subtle off-white Antique paint. When the sophisticated cabinets were paired with creamy granite countertops, rich wood floors, and natural stone backsplash in a classic subway pattern, the overall effect was a traditional, timeless kitchen, which is clean and open without being overly trendy.

In the beginning stages, Andrea was especially skeptical of how the columns that Greg and Marge chose for the island would look, but the risk was worth it because she is now very pleased with their appearance. The stately island is their favorite feature and new hang-out spot – whether entertaining neighbors, doing homework with the kids, or just having a relaxing conversation with a close friend over a cup of coffee.

When asked for advice to pass on to other homeowners thinking of undertaking such a major kitchen renovation, Andrea says, "Go into as many homes as possible. You need to see the options that are out there, so talk with as many people as you can."
